Which Aquarium Heater Type Is Best For Your Tank?

How much do you want to spend, that’s the question.  Aquarium heaters come in all shapes and sizes.  While the heater size and aquarium size are important to match up, there are budget fish tank heater types and of course there are top aquarium heaters that can cost big bucks.  Big fish tanks are going to require big fish tank heaters.  You can however save some money by scaling back on the type of heater you choose.  You also might not mind paying for the extra benefits of some of the best aquarium heaters on the market today.

Hang-On Aquarium Heater

These are the cheapest and most popular fish tank heater types available.  Why might you ask?  They are the cheapest and when choosing a heater, this might be a great place to cut back a little.  The only draw back is that they stick out of the back of the tank.  This is unappealing to some as they like to try to hide their equipment the best they can.  If you don’t mind seeing the heater, this is probably your best choice.

Submersible Aquarium Heater

Submersible heaters are a great choice as a happy medium between some cheaper and more expensive models.  They will cost more than hang-on aquarium heaters, but you won’t have that big thing hanging of the back of the tank.

Substrate Aquarium Heater

Substrate aquarium heaters are a great way to heat you aquarium evenly.  They also are almost completely hidden in your tank.  These heaters are just cables that you cross back and forth under your gravel or substrate.  They are also great for providing adequate heat for plants.  Aquarium heating cables do have one major disadvantage.  If you have any trouble out of them, you have to tear your whole tank apart to replace the cable since it is under everything.

Filter Aquarium Heater

Filter heaters are the perfect choice for those that aren’t limited by a budget.  These fish tank heaters heat your water as it passes through the filter as the name suggests.  You can’t even tell there is a heater in the tank.  This hidden nature of this heater comes at a price.  These are some of the most expensive of all your aquarium options.

Hi Guys, Just about to kick things off with a 3 foot set up, what wattage heater(submersible-temp adjustable type) should I be looking to purchase for this size of tank?

    Hey Stewart,

It depends on the size of the tank by gallons. It’s pretty easy to figure out though. Almost all heaters will have chart on the side showing what size thank they are to be used with.

    Hello Dale,
The cable heater would probably be your best choice if you haven’t set up yet. They heat the most evenly. This provides the most stability for your plants, their roots and your fish.
